Granite and Cedar Underpainting

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Granite and CedarHere is the under-painting. There is a bit more to do on it, but it is pretty much done. The under-painting for this painting lays the base color, the hidden color I see on closer inspection of this very ancient granite. From a distance the red granite looks grey because it is cover with many layers and varieties of lichen, giving the stone a muted grey hue. So the under-painting in effect creates what is in fact the red granite under layer, below the lichen. Interestingly the grey hue, upon loser inspection is made of several pastel colors ranging from orange and red to a lime green, blue, white, and many in between tones, combined from a distance looks grey(ish) to the eye. Next I will begin to work in a heavier impasto, layers of a heavy, opaque paint. Check back soon.
