Witchita Longhorn

October 25th, 2007

Here is the painting I’ve been working on that I mentioned in my last post. It’s nearly done. I still want to work on the texture and the steer a bit more. The image is from a photo I took at the Witchita Mountains in south western Oklahoma, just north of Fort Sill. Longhorn and Bison (among many other animals) roam free in a protected environment. The Witchitas are quite rugged worn down mountain range that once towered over 20,000 ft high and is one of the oldest mountain ranges on the planet at around 500 million years old..cool, eh? The tallest mountain in the  range today is only about 2,000 ft. Great boulders of red granite covered in the most amazing lichen make up the range today.  See photographs for images from the area.

Hello folks, I hope you enjoy my new site. Please feel free to provide feedback.

My current projects:

Just delivered 4 Shakuhachi  bamboo flutes that I have been working on for several months to the Phoenix Shop at Nepenthe, Big Sur. I’m very happy with the quality of this batch; nicely tuned and visually stunning (in my humble opinion!)

On the easel: Image from our visit to the Wichita Mountains last year. I’ll show a work in progress image in a couple of days (it may be done by then). I’m trying a little different style, more expressionist; heavy impasto strokes and other textural manipulations. Feels great to paint loose.

Starting a commercial logo for a Martial Arts Studio locally.

And about to get going on my annual Christmas card…still awaiting that inspirational spark!
